Newfoundland

Oh dear. Well, Newfoundland did better than Quebec. #12 of 13.

Overview

Newfoundland

There is no surprise that Newfoundland came in last for family physician pay. Similar to New Brunswick, Newfoundland had a real paucity of transparent information on their fee structures.
There are some alternative funding contract options (assumably for rural and less populated locations, common in the province), but it was not clear what the pay and perks were for these contracts. Again, this should be transparent information, and when it isn’t, it signals to physicians that a province really isn’t motivated to attract them.

Fee-for-service payments in Newfoundland were abysmal (after overhead and tax take home pay, it wasn’t even $30 an hour). We have a really hard time believing this, so if recruiters from NFLD want to send us any information that is publicly available for the next time we update our rankings, we would appreciate it!

From what we could even find, there was also a ‘stone-age’ approach to family doctor pay, with no additional add on features for managing complex chronic disease, administrative pay, or any time-based modifiers. NFLD also did very poorly in the ‘perks’ department, with a lack of public information on things like continuing medical education funds.

It’s a good think Newfoundlanders are the most charming residents of Canada, and we hope they can charm their politicians into paying family doctors competitively enough to be able to access care! Every Canadian deserves it!

Subject: Fix the Family Doctor Crisis

Family doctors are the backbone of Canada’s health care system, yet they’re being undervalued and underpaid. This outdated pay structure is driving doctors out of provinces, out of practice, or out of the country—leaving communities without the care they desperately need.

We need action now:

Pay Fairly: Ensure family physicians are compensated at competitive national levels.

Support More Than Pay: Provide benefits, reduce administrative burdens, and fairly compensate for on-call work.

Get Transparent: Publish clear payment data to hold the system accountable.

The longer we wait, the worse the crisis becomes. Fair compensation isn’t just about attracting talent—it’s about showing the doctors who care for us that we care about them. Let’s stop the brain drain and keep our health care system strong.
I urge you to prioritize this issue now.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
