Quebec

As the centre of Canada in so many ways, we’d hoped to see Quebec leading the way in best practices for Family Physician Payment Models. What the heck, Quebec! We maybe shouldn’t give you a grade at all, with no clear publicly accessible information on Family Physician pay – it’s almost like you don’t want practitioners in your province?

Overview

Quebec

It was impossible to find any information on how much family doctors get paid in Quebec, and not just because of the language difference! We could not find any source documents detailing fee codes or rules around billing. From what we understand, Quebec does not pay it’s family doctors well, poorly enough that many of them have exited the public system all together and started working at private, pay-out-of-pocket clinics.

If an employer wants to attract new talent, it needs to be forthcoming with details around compensation. These details should not be behind password protected websites, they should be clear and transparent.

Here’s a friendly reminder that Brain Drain 2.0 is ALL about open access information and encourage provincial recruiters and governments to post information about payment models so Family Physicians know what they’re worth, and what their options are!

Subject: Fix the Family Doctor Crisis

Family doctors are the backbone of Canada’s health care system, yet they’re being undervalued and underpaid. This outdated pay structure is driving doctors out of provinces, out of practice, or out of the country—leaving communities without the care they desperately need.

We need action now:

Pay Fairly: Ensure family physicians are compensated at competitive national levels.

Support More Than Pay: Provide benefits, reduce administrative burdens, and fairly compensate for on-call work.

Get Transparent: Publish clear payment data to hold the system accountable.

The longer we wait, the worse the crisis becomes. Fair compensation isn’t just about attracting talent—it’s about showing the doctors who care for us that we care about them. Let’s stop the brain drain and keep our health care system strong.
I urge you to prioritize this issue now.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
